WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association is pressing ahead with its annual meeting in Houston despite the mass shooting tragedy in Uvelde, Tex.

The association, easily one of the most powerful political groups in the United States, has issued a statement making clear the event will proceed as planned.

It describes the Uvelde shooting as the act of a “lone, deranged criminal,” offers sympathy to the families of the victims and suggests schools need to be more secure.

Texas Republicans Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz have come under withering criticism for their planned appearances at the convention, which begins Friday.

Former president Donald Trump, who is also among those slated to attend, has confirmed he’ll be there to deliver a speech.

Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the mass shooting Tuesday, all of them inside the same fourth-grade classroom at Robb Elementary School.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime,” the NRA statement reads.

“As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.”

Neither Abbott nor Cruz have yet made clear whether or not they still plan to be in Houston for the three-day convention.
