Patrons of the Wood Buffalo Regional Library (WBRL) may borrow the latest computing gadgets and devices on their next visit.

The WBRL announced the launch of “Tech To Go”: Its newest circulating technology collection.

Cardholders can borrow the latest tech gadgets, including Chromebooks, Lenovo Ideapad laptops, and assorted MacBooks and iPads.

WBRL Director, Melissa Flett, said Tech To Go bridges the “digital divide” in Wood Buffalo.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the closures affecting in-person library services, we heard from patrons that they relied on our public computers to work on resumes and job applications, complete important paperwork, and access the online world. Our team realized we needed to expand the technology we offer for home use.”

The library applied for funds from the federal government’s Health Community Initiative.

Worth $31-million, the initiative is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of transforming Canada’s public spaces.

WBRL, in coordination with the Wood Buffalo Community Foundation and Community Foundations of Canada, received funding in 2021 to complete Tech To Go.

“The Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada to transform public space in response to COVID-19. WBRL’s Tech to Go collection provides innovative digital solutions, one of three main Healthy Communities Initiative themes.”

Additional information on the Health Community Initiative is available online.

Library devices come with basic instructions and gadgets, including wireless mice, and Apple-brand magic keyboards and pencils.

More devices are expected over the summer.

WBRL patrons can also borrow books, DVDs, video games, digital products, and other resources, or participate in library programs and services.
