Early morning situation in Abasand prompts shelter-in-place order by RCMP

Details have emerged following an incident in the early hours of Aug. 2, 2022, in the neighbourhood of Abasand.

At 2:15 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a call about a man with a firearm in a nearby wooded area.

Police issued a shelter-in-place order as they looked for the man, requesting area residents remain in their homes and that no visitors to Abasand be allowed entry.

Later that morning, the man surrendered to RCMP.

“Wood Buffalo RCMP apprehended the male without incident and without injury. Police did not believe there was any risk to the public throughout the incident.”

RCMP thanked the public for their assistance and patience, lifting the shelter-in-place notice at 9:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
