RMWB to present flood mitigation design options

The Municipality has announced design options for permanent flood mitigation for downtown Fort McMurray.

Enhancements are planned for Reach 6, which is located along Clearwater Drive towards the Longboat Landing neighbourhood.

Residents and business owners are invited to share feedback and ideas online on at least two design options for the project area.

“Residents can highlight their priorities, including accessibility to the Clearwater River, cost of the project, transportation accessibility such as traffic, pedestrian, and cycling, aesthetics.”

Public engagement sessions are also scheduled for Sept. 15 to Oct. 16, 2022, including the Fall Trade Show from Sept. 23-25.

The following is a list of scheduled virtual and in-person open house dates:

  • Sept. 20 from 6 – 8 p.m.: Virtual – Microsoft Teams
  • Sept. 23-25: Fall Trade Show at MacDonald Island Park
  • Sept. 27 from 2 – 6 p.m. and Oct. 1 from 12 – 4 p.m.: Jubilee Centre – 1st Floor (9909 Franklin Ave)

According to the Municipality, proposed design concepts will bring permanent flood mitigation for Reach 6 to the 1:200-year level or an elevation of 250.9 m.

The deadline to share feedback online is Oct. 16, 2022.

Flood mitigation construction in Fort McMurray began in October 2020.
