Wood Buffalo RCMP have arrested a man twice in the same following a series of suspicious fires in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.

On April 23, 2023, officers were called to the Nation after witnesses said they spotted a male suspect lighting four fires in the area earlier that day.

RCMP arrived and located the man, who attempted to flee from police, but was quickly apprehended.

After being charged with four counts of arson damaging property and one count of resisting arrest, the man was released on conditions.

However, on April 26, police responded again to Chipewyan Prairie, after reports of a man setting fires, and arrested the same man.

The 39-year-old resident from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation faces additional charges:

  • Six counts of Arson Damaging his own Property
  • Two counts of Failing to comply with a Release Order

No injuries were reported in either incident.

The man is scheduled to appear in court on May 1, 2023.
