UPDATE: Fire near Gregoire Lake being held

On May 2, 2023, the RMWB had issued an Evacuation Alert for Gregoire Lake Estates and Anzac as a nearby wildfire could spread to that area. An update from the Municipality said the fire is now being held.

The Municipality has provided an update concerning a wildfire near Gregoire Lake Estates.

According to Alberta Wildfire on May 3, 2023, the wildfire is being held.

On May 2, 2023, the Municipality had issued an evacuation alert due to the potential of a wildfire spreading to nearby communities of Gregoire Lake Estates, Anzac, and Fort McMurray First Nation #468.


“At this time, an Evacuation Order has not been issued. This is an alert/warning for residents in the affected area to be ready to leave on short notice.”

In its release, the RMWB said fire behaviour overnight was calm.

“Alberta Wildfire is continuing with air and ground suppression efforts today. At this time, there is no immediate risk to the nearby communities of Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray First Nation #468. Anyone in these areas should still be alert, continue to follow instructions from emergency officials and keep a safe distance away from operations.”

Smoke might be present and air quality is being closely monitored.

Symptoms due to poor air quality include increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, and shortness of breath.

Anyone affected should follow the Municipality on socials and its website for the latest updates.


This comes after the Municipality issued a Fire Restriction for most of Wood Buffalo the same morning.


“The dry conditions, warming temperatures and forecasted periods of high winds continue to elevate the wildfire risk. Everyone must use caution when working or enjoying the outdoors during this time.”
