RMWB Council has unanimously approved a motion to provide monetary support for a fellow councillor involved in an upcoming lawsuit.
During the discussion at the council meeting on May 9, 2023, it was found the RMWB was not named in the lawsuit.
Mayor and councillors will cover the cost of an insurance deductible worth $10,000 for Councillor Shafiq Dogar.
On Feb. 8, 2023, Dogar was sued for defamation by local resident Sultan Zaman and SMG Builder.
Dogar requested the administration for legal support in his defence.
Legal Services has determined the Councillor has insurance coverage under its Commercial General Liability Policy.
“We have been advised that, as the Municipality is the holder of the Policy, it is likely that we would be found to be liable under the Policy by a court.”
The department said it’s likely the municipality would be legally responsible.
Funds will be paid from the Emerging Issues Reserve.
