Wood Buffalo RCMP has sounded the alarm after officers pulled over several motorists for driving at excessive speeds.
In a release, police provided its most recent case, which occurred on Stoney Mountain Road in Anzac on May 23, 2023 at 1:45 pm.
“A Blue Ford F150 was observed travelling at a high rate of speed in the 50 km/h posted speed limit zone. The driver, a 17 year old male resident of Fort McMurray, was found to be travelling at 91 km/h and was subsequently issued a violation notice for the speeding.”
On May 22, at 3:00 pm, officers observed from the Parsons Creek Overpass a Hyundai Santa Fe heading southbound onto Highway 63, travelling at 107 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in Fort McMurray.
A 39-year-old man from Fort MacKay had been issued a violation notice.
Earlier, on May 5 at 8:30 am, RCMP said they spotted the 37-year-old male driver from Fort McMurray in a Jeep SUV travelling southbound on Hwy. 63 at 134 km/h in an 80-zone.
Officers issued a mandatory court appearance for speeding to the driver.
Wood Buffalo RCMP said, according to collision data in Road Safety Vision 2010, 17 per cent of all road users killed per year were travelling at excessive speeds.
“Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to negotiate curves or manoeuver around obstacles in the roadways, extends the distance necessary for a vehicle stop and increases the distance a vehicle travels when the driver reacts to a hazard. There is no such thing as safe speeding.”
Police warn exceeding the speed limit or travelling at a speed not suited to conditions in any situation is potentially dangerous.
