New Rainbow Space to welcome travellers to YMM

YMM will host a celebration of its Rainbow Space Designation by Pride YMM at the airport's courtyard on Friday, June 23, 2023.

An event held at the Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) will celebrate a new designation recognizing it as a safe and inclusive space for the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Wood Buffalo.

On June 23, 2023, YMM will host a celebration of its Rainbow Space Designation by Pride YMM.

In a release, the Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) said the airport is one of 25 organizations and businesses in the region committed to promoting and fostering inclusivity.

FMAA President and CEO Denean Robinson said equity, diversity, and inclusion has always been their priority.

“FMAA firmly believes that providing equality of opportunity, valuing diversity, and promoting a culture of inclusion are critical to our success. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable while at our terminal.”

Several volunteers with Pride YMM reviewed its human resource policies, reviewed signage, and even journeyed through YMM as “mock passengers” to ensure an inclusive experience.

Hanna Fridhed, the Executive Director of Pride YMM, said the airport passed with flying colours and is now certified Rainbow Space.

“Our airport is an important hub in our region, and the first space many are greeted by when they arrive. FMAA’s proactive work to be a safe space for all that travel through our region, those who utilize YMM for business and events, as well as staff is a crucial step towards an inclusive region and community.”

The Rainbow Space ceremony will be held Friday, June 23, at the YMM Courtyard from 3 – 4 p.m.
