Wood Buffalo businesses are coming together to hand off vital support to the Fort McMurray Saints football team.
In a statement, the team has announced it received monetary donations totaling $30,000 from Yeti Roughrider Rentals and J&S Bridge Construction.
The Saints posted on Facebook on July 11, 2023, heavy rains and localized flooding damaged Timberlea Community field.
“Our roots have been an integral part of our community for over two decades sending numerous student athletes to play football at the highest levels in the world. Unfortunately, a recent flood at Timberlea Community field has resulted in the loss of our practice equipment, creating a significant setback that threatens our ability to support local high school athletes.”
While the team has insurance, uninsured damages from the flood were estimated at $30,000.
As of July 20, more than 30 individuals have also pledged their support with monetary donations on MoneyDolly.
“The outpouring of support from Yeti Roughrider Rentals and J&S Bridge Construction highlights the strength and unity within the Fort McMurray community. Their contributions will enable the Fort McMurray Saints to rebuild their practice equipment inventory and continue fostering athletic development, teamwork, and community engagement for players of all ages.”
Saints co-Head Coach Kevin Garbuio said their generosity also renewed their faith in the power of community.
“With their support, we are determined to make a triumphant return to the field, better equipped than ever.”
On the team’s MoneyDolly account, he said no football team in Alberta high school football travels more than the Saints.
Garbuio said the team is holding a fundraiser this season to help cover travel costs.
“We have boys and girls from all over the region of Wood Buffalo. I am proud of the work these student athletes do in the community and in their schools.”
Garbuio said their goal is to gain 20 supporters to donate this season in exchange for gifts, including food, candles, and cookie dough.
