Wildfire danger set to high

Recent thunderstorms have started nine new wildfires in the area.

“One is out of control, about 37 kilometers north of Kearl Lake, seven are being held and one is under control,” said Alberta Wildfire Officer Lynn Daina.

Three of these fires are approximately 50 kilometres east of Fort Chipewyan, directly across Lake Athabasca, and 3 are approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Fort Chipewyan.

There are 10 aircraft and 64 firefighters positioned in the Fort McMurray forest area today for Initial attack and support.

Since March 1st, there have been 62 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area burning a total of 2,261.15 hectares.
