Powder’s fate was determined at his sentencing hearing on Nov. 28 in Fort McMurray Provincial Court.
He was originally charged with first degree murder in the 2015 shooting death of Tyler McDermid.
However, on Sept. 14, 2018, Powder was found guilty by a jury of second degree murder.
