Kids and pets brimming with energy from staying indoors last week will need new ways to unwind.

Effective March 23, 2020, all Municipal parks and playgrounds in Wood Buffalo are off-limits to the public until further notice.

This includes dog parks, outdoor sports fields and rinks, community gardens and gazebos, picnic areas, running tracks, and skate parks.

Mayor Don Scott says the move aligns with local, provincial, and national efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“I understand that these are aggressive steps to be taking, but by putting these precautionary measures in place now, we will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect our community.”

He added everyone has a role to play in following public health recommendations and checking up on neighbours and the most vulnerable.

Municipal trails and walkways such as Birchwood Trail remain open.

The RMWB reminds residents to use social distancing when in these areas.

They also ask pet owners to keep dogs and other animals on a leash when travelling on trails and walkways.
