The Court of Queen’s Bench sentenced Nathan Gordey to five and a half years in jail for his role in a deadly home invasion on April 29, 2019.

Gordey pleaded guilty to charges of break and enter to commit robbery and forcible confinement with a firearm.

Justice David Gates allowed the 22-year-old to read a statement prior to sentencing.

In his statement, Gordey apologized saying he takes full responsibility for his actions and the death of 20-year-old Brandon Stevens.

Justice Gates rendered his decision on July 17, though the original sentencing date was July 9.

Since Gordey spent 412 days in custody in Edmonton’s Remand Centre prior to trial on an obstruction charge the judge gave him credit for the time served to reduce his sentence to three and a half years.

Justice Gates also said he would provide both counsels with his full explanation for the sentencing at a later date.

He, along with co-accused Brent Goodridge and Brandon Stevens, participated in the home invasion of a Timberlea residence on April 29, 2019.

According to the agreed statement of facts, the homeowner shot and killed Stevens in self-defence.

Goodridge and Gordey fled the scene, but RCMP eventually found and arrested them.
