Baseball tournament a grand slam for Wood Buffalo

Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo wrapped up the successful return of exciting, competitive elite 18 and under baseball.

The 2022 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship presented by Pepsi crowned Team Ontario as champions of the four-day tournament.

It’s the third prominent national tournament hosted by Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association in the last six years.

“This event is a showcase of athletic excellence, strong team work and a passion for the sport, and we have been so proud to serve as the tournament host in 2022.” Said Mike Mayuk, 2022 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship presented by Pepsi Organizing Committee Co-Chair and FMMBA Treasurer.

Partnering with the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, the FMMBA previously hosted the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup and the 2018 Baseball Canada 18U National Championship.

Baseball Canada CEO Jason Dickson said they were excited to return to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo.

“Baseball Canada was very excited to return to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo for the 18U National Championship and a tremendous week of baseball. We know that the host committee has put a tremendous amount of work in to put on a quality event for the players, coaches, officials, volunteers and fans so I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on a job well done.”

Ontario’s Mississauga Tigers edged Team New Brunswick for the gold medal, with Team British Columbia winning the bronze medal.

Legacy Dodge Field at Shell Place and Ross Hennigar Ball Park welcomed hundreds of players, coaches, officials, and families and fans through the turnstiles.

Baseball Canada will return in 2023 for another instalment of the 18U National Championship.

More details are expected in the spring of next year.
