Weekend arsons spark RCMP investigation

Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating as many as six vehicular arsons that occurred between July 16-17, 2023.

In a statement, police say the fires occurred over a three-hour span between Janvier and Fort McMurray.

  • July 16, 2023, at 11:30 p.m. RCMP and Janvier Fire Department responded to a vehicle arson in front of a residence in Janvier. 
  • July 17, 2023, at 12:00 a.m. RCMP located a burnt-out vehicle left on the access road to Janvier.
  • July 17, 2023, at 1:30 a.m. RCMP and Janvier Fire Department responded to a forest fire.  Once on scene, a third vehicle arson was discovered.  The fire had spread to the surrounding forest, causing greater damage to the area.
  • July 17, 2023, at 1:00 a.m. in Fort McMurray, RCMP and Fort McMurray Fire Department responded to two vehicles arsons along Centennial Drive.
  • July 17, 2023, at 1:50 a.m. RCMP and the Fort McMurray Fire Department responded to another vehicle fire near Cobblestone Bay.

 

Thankfully, no injuries were reported resulting from the fires.

Investigators are asking the public with information or any surveillance footage of the arsons to contact RCMP or Crimestoppers.
