Wood Buffalo RCMP made an arrest related to the attempted theft of catalytic converters in downtown Fort McMurray.

On Aug. 14, 2023, police said officers responded to an attempted theft from a commercial vehicle parked on Riedel Street.

“Sometime during the overnight hours, an unknown suspect attempted to steal a catalytic converter from a commercial vehicle parked in the area. The suspect was not successful at that time.”

Investigators followed the matter, and at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 15, found the suspect while he attempted to steal the converter from the same vehicle.

RCMP arrested a 29-year-old man from Fort McMurray without incident.

While he’s yet to be formally charged, police said he faces several offences, including the following:

  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of break-in tools

The suspect is due in court on Sept. 20, 2023.
